RESULTS OF THE 2001 CANADIAN
CRYSTAL GROWING COMPETITION

For this year's contest we added three new Sections:

  • an "Outliers" Section to encompass schools that did not fit into an established section. There were two entries this year.
  • a "Teachers" Section to recognize the support that they give the students, and to give them an opportunity to strut their stuff. Four teachers' crystals were submitted. When you look at the results below, some of the students did better :-)
  • a "Homeschoolers" Section for children who are taught in their own home by a parent. Thanks to Gayle REMISCH for promoting this venture. Although over a dozen homeschoolers participated, due to unforseen circumstances (e.g. others knocking over the apparatus) only two homeschoolers submitted crystals. The amazing thing is that the growers of these crystals, and are only 6 and 7 years old, respectively!!!

    For the various sections around Canada, the following Tables list all the best crystals by School with Students' Names, Weights, Quality Scores, Overall Scores, and Overall & Quality Rankings.

  • The first Table lists crystals entered in the Best Quality category.
  • The second lists crystals entered in the Best Overall category.
  • The final Table lists crystals submitted by Teachers

    There are still a few information gaps that will be filled in when available.

    Congratulations to all who participated and especially those whose crystals are represented here.

    A special thank you to Anachemia Science for providing the alum used in the contest, to the teachers who supervised their students, to the Chemical Institute of Canada volunteers who coordintated the contest in their local area, and to Dr. George FERGUSON of the Department of Chemistry, University of Guelph for assistance in judging the crystals.
