This was a record breaking year:
So we have reason to be proud of the accomplishments of all the participating students.
In all, we received submissions from 15 different parts of the country. For the various sections around Canada, the following Tables list all the best crystals by School with Students' Names, crystal Weights, Quality Scores, Overall Scores, and Overall & Quality Rankings.
There are still a few information gaps that will be filled in when available.
An interesting coincidence this year was that four members of the CYR family (two in Ontario, and one each in Quebec and New Brunswick) submitted crystals.
Congratulations to all who participated and especially those whose crystals are represented here.
A special thank you to Anachemia Science for providing the copper sulfate used in the contest, to the teachers who supervised their students, to the Chemical Institute of Canada volunteers who coordintated the contest in their local area, and to Dr. George FERGUSON of the Department of Chemistry, University of Guelph for assistance in judging the crystals.
The International Competition may come as a surprise to many of you, since it was not advertised. It was organized by Dr. Harry Powell of Cambridge University, UK as part of the International Union of Crystallographers' XIX Congress held August 2002 in Geneva, Switzerland.
In all, 5-6 crystals each from Belgium, the UK, and Canada were entered.
Canada did very well: we placed 2nd, 3rd and 5th!! Well done to all. A table at the bottom of this page shows the results.
See you again next year.
(Please advise if I've goofed up on the spelling of anyone's name.) |
