James' mother died about 4 months after he was born. He was then raised by John HUNTER (his uncle?), who did or contemplated adopting him. James kept the CORKUM name. The 1871 Census for Ritcey's Cove (now Riverport) shows the HUNTER family consisting of John 60, Susanna 63, Simeon 25, Elizabeth 22, Margaret 17, and James CORKUM age 9 and fisherman.
