Merrill worked for Northern Electric in Montreal in the late 30's, then briefly for radio station CFCY, Charlottetown, before finishing his career with the CBC at the Radio Canada International shortwave station in Sackville, NB and later at Engineering Headquarters in Montreal. He was a "ham" radio enthusiast all his life with call signs VE1GH, VE2YB, and VE1MH.

Merrill's and his wife's ashes were distibuted in the waters of Prince's Inlet between the Lunenburg Yacht club and Young's Landing at Martin's Brook. Their coming and going dates are inscribed on the back side of his parents' head stone in Lunenburg Hillside Cemetery. If you turn 90 degees to the left you would be looking at the Lunenburg Academy.
