Captain Corkum was a deep sea fisherman and commanded a number of Bluenose-class schooners until his retirement in 1949. He survived the Halifax explosion, having his beam trawler cut in half by an ocean liner, and being caught in an August gale off of Sable Island (several other schooners were not so lucky). Leo and his wife are buried in Lunenburg Hillside Cemetery.
