The JUNG, (now Young) families of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, came from the village of Lützellinden just outside Giessen, in the Principality of Nassau, Weilbourg, Germany. This area was referred to as Litreland on Ann's List of Passengers.

They left the Port of Roggilberger, Rotterdam, Holland on 21 June 1750, with John Spurrier, Master, and landed at Halifax in September 1750. This was the first voyage of the Ann with 130 passengers, signed by John Dick, with 312 heads. Andreas must have some wealth, since the Ship List of the Ann shows no indebtness for him, i.e. he was able to pay his family's full fare.

There was a serious epidemic among the Ann's people which menaced the whole colony of Halifax and there are records of at least fifty burials with German names during the fall of 1750 and the first half of the succeeding winter.

After arrival in Halifax, they were given some land. The 1750 Allotment Lists, "Crown Land", among "Dutch lots in the North Suburbs of Halifax showed Andreas JUNG to have been assigned lot D-2 Front Range. The other members of the JUNG family were assigned lots as follows:
Adam JUNG E-12 Front Range,
Heindrick JUNG E-13 Front Range,
Jacob JUNG E-10 Back Range,
Johannes JUNG E-11 Front Range,
Leonard JUNG E-11 Back Range, and a
Mr. Young B-6 Front Row or Range and B-6 Back Range,
"Perhaps Jacob enlisted along with Henry and that is why he appears in no further Civil Records ?" W. Bell's Registry.

List of Settlers at Halifax 1752, [Printed by Atkin's], "Among Swiss and Germans in the North Suburbs" showed the Andreas JUNG family consisting of one male and one female, both over 16. The Johannes JUNG family: four males and one female above 16, one male below 16 and one female below 16. ["Obviously some others had been taken into the household for a time." W. Bell's Registry]. The Adam JUNG family consisted of four males and one female above the age of 16, and one male and one female below 16. In all, there were 14-16 JUNGs in the North Suburbs Halifax in 1752.

The first Compassionate Victual List (1753) in Lunenburg shows Andreas and Barbara Elizabeth JUNG (Rebecca Elizabeth?). Subsequent lists show Andreas JUNG, Rebecca Elizabeth, and Maria JUNG(June 1755); Andreas JUNG, Rebecca, Maria, and Christian JUNG (# 556-9, Feb. - May 1756); and Andreas JUNG, Rebecca, Maria, and Catherina (Jan- May 1757).

When it came time to receive land assignments, Andreas was assigned town lot C-14 in Steinfort's Division (Return of Arms, Dec 1753 and Return of Divisions, July 1754) and lot F-1 in Creighton's Division (Registry of Town Lots 1760). The assigned number probably indicates some sort of house. For farming he received lots Mahone Bay A-3 (Allotment List of 30 acre Farm Lots 1753-4) and shared half of Mahone Bay B-7 with Johannes JUNG (Registry of 30 acre Farm Lots 1760). He also drew Second Division Lot H-2 (First Drawing of 300 Acre Lots, 3 Oct. 1763). Andreas must have been a successful businessman since by 1784 he owned 1307 acres and his son Casper had 30 acres (Township Grants, 30 June 1784).

In the distribution of live stock (Lot #177, 1754) Andreas shared 6 sheep, 1 sow, and 1 goat with George Thettoffer, WESTHAVER. Andreas also participated in the 1756 Cattle Expedition to Grand Pré (name horizontal).

The first Nova Scotia election was held 31 July 1758 and Andreas JUNG voted for Knaut and Keddy.

Andreas was also in the Militia as a Private. At 6 am on the 9th of Aug 1758, he set out with a group of Militiamen from Lunenburg under the command of Captain D. Christopher Jessen, in charge of 80 Officiers and Men. A Journal was kept of their daily movements as they pursued Indians who had been Murdering and Scalping residents; They found evidence of them at Mush-A-Mush [Mahone]. They returned in about two weeks, another fruitless Indian Hunt. Peace was eventually made with the Indians in 1760. [From History of Lunenburg by Minnie C. Hewitt, page 48. She was a teacher, daughter of Charles Hewitt and Sarah Eliza, 22 August 1869 - 28 Jan. 1963 bur. Lun. Hillcrest cem.]

Andreas was an ardent Lutheran. In 1760 he wrote to relatives in Germany, regarding the need of an Evangelist Lutheran Minister; he also noted that peace was made with the Indians. In 1770 he was elected one of the Elders of Zion Lutheran Church. During the construction of the church he contributed voluntary labour, a few materials and money. He was also employed in the construction of the Church, as one of the highest rated artificers and was paid 3 shillings a day. He signed the Membership Roll in 1775 and appears in Church Account Book 1770 - 1785. In addition to being an Elder, he was Church Treasurer from its formation in 1770 until the time of his death in 1808. During the construction of the Parsonage in 1773, lime etc. for mortar and plaster was bought from Casper JUNG.

Legal matters were also pursued by Andreas. In 1791 he was a member of the Grand Jury and also a witness in Boutelier Murder Trial, re. the Emmeneau Murders. [See pg. 502-503, "History of the County of Lunenburg" by Mather Byles DesBrisay].

Andreas' profession was that of a Carpenter and Wheelwright. He taught his trade to Apprentices including Leonard's son Johannes (see document which follows).

[At this time, Andreas was 66, Leonhard was 54, and Johannes was 16 (and didn't contract marriage until age 26; don't know when he went to an Ale House for the first time.)]

Andreas kept a diary and other records of his church and times. They are referred to as the JUNG Manuscript in The Foreign Protestants and Settlement of N.S." by Winthrop Bell. P.A.N.S. M.G.4. Box 87 has the Hogskin Bound Manuscript or Journal written by Andreas. I held it in my hands in 1993 while at PANS. There was a notation that it was Not to be Photocopied, presumably because the light flash would bleach the ink and the spine might not survive the flattening out. In 1995, the manuscript was no longer available for viewing, for preservation reasons.

In the name of the Holy Trinity, Amen

On the 19th day of the month of November in the year of our Lord 1805 and in the 45th year of the reign of our most gracious King George III of Great Britain. I, Andreas Jung living in the county of Lunenburg in the province of Nova Scotia, inhabitant and wagoner. We thank the Lord to be of perfect mind and being. I am aware of the mortality and transience of my body and know that all men must die one day. Therefore I make and declare my last will and testiment in the following way: First of all I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God who gave it to me, and my body to the earth according to Christian tradition, and appoint my wife as the Executor, that it may receive an honest burial. I have no doubt that it may on tha day of the great resurrection be resurrected. In respect to my earthly possessions with which God has blessed me in this world, I declare it to be carried out in the following fashion:

1. It is my serious wish that my dear wife Rebecca Elizabeth shall receive £ 100 of Land Money, or, if the money is not enough, then it shall be done "not off-hand" [?] so that the £ 100 shall be complete. She shall do what she wishes with House and Clothes. She can keep as many Books as she wants and should she leave some they are to be divided by Casper, Sophia Elizabeth DEUTHOF, Margaretha WESTHOFER, Catherine MASSON and Rebecca Elizabeth MORASCH in 5 equal parts. After expenses paid, Andreas Meisner, and Rebecca Elizabeth, George Herman's wife shall receive £ 5. Andreas Meisner shall receive £ 35 from me.

2. The tools used for wagoning I give to my son Casper and his heirs.

3. The farming tools I give to my four daughters Sophia DEUTHOF, Margaretha WESTHOFER, Catherine MASSON and Rebecca Elizabeth in equal parts.

4. I give to my son Casper JUNG, Sophia DEUTHOF, Margaretha WESTHOFER, Catherine MASSON and Rebecca Elizabeth MORASCH to divide 300 Acres First Division Lot C-5. I have already divided.?? in Second Division. I give grandchildren, Andreas Meisner and Rebecca Elizabeth, George Herman's wife for themselves and their Heirs.

5. 30 Acres on First Island to 4 Daughters? Casper already received more than enough Land Money years ago.

6. And lastly I declare that my wife Rebecca Elizabeth and my son Casper (when he is in his right mind again before this testament becomes effective) [an alternate translation says "my wife ... and son ... testify that I am in my right mind"] and my dear friend Mr. Casper ERNST and my dear brother-in-law Nicolas CONRADT shall be the executors of this my last will and teatament, that all shall happen according to my good and faithful opinion. At the same time I amend all my previous wills and testaments. Which makes this last will and testament the only one I officially acknowledge. Therefore I sign and seal it on the above date.
