At present, the Index gives the FAMILY NAME and FIRST INITIAL for each HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD in selected communities in the county. In addition, a Master Index of names for the whole county with corresponding place names has been created.
In some cases the name and/or initial was indistinct. If totally unknown, a ? is included; if the letter could have been X, but I was uncertain, then X? was included.
These names were abstracted from the A.F. Church & Co. map of Lunenburg County. It is uncertain when the map was prepared. There is a printed notation on the map "Entered by Law on the 24th of March, A.D. 1864". Along the margin is a handwritten notation "prepared 1883-7".
