D> #130. Johann Lorentz CONRADT
Note that Lorentz is also #296 and #392

Born: 30 Nov 1701 in Klein Heubach, Germany, the third of six children.
Died:7 Mar 1762 in Lunenburg, age 60.

Father: Burkhart CONRADT #260 (b 19 Jan 1670 - d 12 Apr 1714).
Mother: Anna Maria RENTZ #261 (b 25 Jan 1671 - d 16 Feb 1709).

Married: 26 Jan 1728, age 21, in Klein Heubach to Anna Maria Salome WORTHER(N) #131 (b 31 Dec 1707 - d 12 Oct 1787).

Children:
1. Rebecca Elizabeth, #65 (b 11 Dec 1728 - d 23 Jan 1819) m 11 Feb 1757 to Johann Andreas JUNG Jr. #64
2. Johann Nickolaus (b 9 Jun 1731 - d 19 Aug 1731);
3. Johann Nicholas, (b 24 Jun 1732 - d 4 Dec 1816);
4. Johann Georg (b 26 Jul 1735 - d 1 Sep 1809);
5. Johann Casper CONRADT #148, and #196, (b 22 May 1738 - d 22 Oct 1826), m 8 Dec 1760 Frederica Katharina WOLPH #149 and #197;
6. Johann Lorentz Jr. (b 9 Jun 1741 - d 1797);
7. Georg Phillipp (b 3 Jan 1745 - d 14 Jun 1747); and
8. Anna Margaretha (b 7 Apr 1748 - d 30 May 1791).

When it came time for the CONRADTs to leave for the new world, they and their friends and relatives assembled in Klein Heubach. On the morning they were to embark the church bell summoned them to a special religious service and great lamentation was manifested at their departure. Lorentz (then 46) and his family left Klein Heubach by barge 15 Jun 1751 and ten days later sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on the Murdock for Halifax, arriving there 15 Sep 1751. One source has only Lorentz and Nicholas sailing then with Anna and the remainder of the family following a few years later. Bell's Notes shows the family composed of 1 adult male, two adult females, 3 male children and 1 female child. Since he could not pay the fare, he was indebted for 4 1/2 Freights at a cost of £ 318.18.12, which he had to work off upon arrival in Nova Scotia. He signed his name as "Lorentz CONRADT".

Since the settlers had to depend upon the government for food and shelter upon their arrival, their names appeared on Victualing Lists so that proper amounts of rations could be apportioned. In a List of Settlers in Halifax (July 1752), [Printed by Akins], among the Foreigners "At the Blockhouse and the Isthmus", were listed Lorentz CONRAT, with a household consisting of 4 males over 16, 1 female over 16 yrs, 2 males below 16 and 1 female below 16 for a total of 8. The Aug - Oct 1752 Victualing List (# 4) for Halifax shows, Lorentz CONRADT, Anna Salome, John Nicholas, Johann George, John Caspar, John Lorentz, Rebecca Elizabeth, and Anna Margaretha. Although Rebecca had married a few months earlier (to Andreas JUNG Jr.), according to W Bell, it was not uncommon for a girl married after arrival in Nova Scotia to remain on the Victualling List under her parent's family for some time. The Compassionate Victualing List of Feb - April 1753 in Halifax shows Lorentz Conrad, Anna Salome, John Nicholas and Johann George Conrad, while Johan Caspar Conrad appears later near the end of the list. W Bell comments that four names on the compassionate list would imply not more than 6 members; Caspar's name was presumely inserted to make the CONRADT family ration up to the proper amount.

After the 1753 move to Lunenburg, victualing lists were kept for several years. The List of June 1755 shows Lorentz Conrad, Anna Salome, John Nicholas, John George, John Casper, John Lorentz and Anna Marg. Conrad (# 501-7). The List of Feb-May 1756 shows Salome Conrad, Nicholas, George, Caspar, Lorentz and Margaretha Conrad (# 834-9), and Catharina Conrad (# 1106) who was the wife of J. Nich., (m. in June to A. Cath.). The List of Jan-May 1757 showed Salome Conrad, Nicholas, Catharina, George, Lorentz, Casper and Margaretha Conrad. Although Lorentz Sr. does not appear in the 1756 and 1757 Victualing Lists, W Bell observed that he was still very much alive, as shown by the Zion Lutheran Church Records.

The next task was the assignment of land. Each head of household was assigned a lot in Lunenburg, as well as farm lots spread throughout the county. In the Return of Divisions, July 1754, Lorentz Conrad was given town lots F-10 and F-11 in Strasburger's Division for a house and garden. He still held these lots in the 1760 Registry. For farming, under the name Lawrence Conraed, he was allotted 30 acres in Centre A-24 (1753-4). The records show that he received, under the name Laurentz Conraed, Middle Range A-4. Since this appears in the Registry as Nicholas's Lot, and Nicholas though eligible for one, does not appear by name in the First Allotment List, W. Bell thought this must have been a Registrar's error and this should be Nicholas Conrad.

Return of Arms Lun. Dec. 1753, Laurentz Conraed, Strasburger's Division.

In the Livestock Distribution 1754, Lorentz Conrad jointly with John Philip Himmelman, Lot # 81, were given 6 sheep, a sow, and a goat. His son Nicolas participated in the Cattle Expedition 1756, wherin some men from Lunenburg went to Grand Pré to acquire cattle left behind after the expulsion of the Acadians to Louisiana.

Between 1756 - 1761 the sons, Nicholas, George, Casper and Lorentz all married, and the following is the registry record of Town and Farm Lots for the whole family. .

1760. Registry of Town Lots 1760.
* Lorentz Conraed, Strasburger's Division Lots F-10 and F-11.
* Nicholas Conraed, Creighton's Division, Lot E-10.
* Casper Conrad, Zouberbuhler's Division Lot H-3.
* Lorenz Conrad [presumably Lorentz Jr.], Zouberbuhler's Division Lot H-5.
[Listed among Blanks filled up By Order of Col.Sutherland 22 June 1761.]
