Your duty is to entice as many high schools as possible in your area to participate in the NCW Crystal Growing Contest.
You have the freedom to conduct the contest in your area as you see fit.
The following suggested steps may assist you in the conduct of the contest in your area.
MAKING CONTACT
1. In August, compile a list of all the high schools in your area. This might be done by using the phone book and/or calling the various school boards and requesting a list from them.
2. Just before school starts, call each of the schools to get correct phone and FAX ( or e-mail) numbers and the name of the Science Head (or to confirm the names of the contact teachers from years before).
3. On day two of school, FAX (or e-mail) a letter of invitation to each of the teacher contacts at each school (see sample below).
REGISTERING SCHOOLS
1. Keep a list of those schools that contact you.
2. Respond to each and indicate when and how you will receive crystals for judging (nominally by the end of National Chemistry Week or at your discretion).
JUDGING CRYSTALS
1. About a week before the end of the contest you may wish to contact the registered schools to determine which ones will have crystals to be judged.
2. After all of the crystals have been received, judge or arrange for a local crystallographer to judge your crystals; if possible have more than one judge.
AWARDING PRIZES
1. CIC headquarters in Ottawa will provide free T-shirts for each local section.
2. Your local CIC executive may wish also to prepare certificates, ribbons, cash, books, trophys, etc as well to give to the winning schools.
3. Award prizes . You may wish to tie this into local National Chemistry Week festivities.
SUBMITTING CRYSTALS FOR NATIONAL JUDGING
1. By the designated deadline, forward your best quality and best crystal overall to the national coordinator for judging.

This contest is sponsored by the Chemical Institute of Canada as part of its annual National Chemistry Week celebration (October 15-21). Prizes are awarded at the local and national levels.

Schools will be provided with FREE starting material (Rochelle salt) kindly donated by Anachemia Science. The submitted crystals will be judged professionally on the basis of quality and size.
The contest has just begun and runs until mid October.
