POTASSIUM SODIUM TARTRATE
or "ROCHELLE SALT"

Rochelle Salt

This picture shows the structure of the Rochelle Salt crystal. It is one of the best crystals ever submitted. It was prepared by teacher Sandy Rekrut of Sisler High School from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It is clear, the faces were perfectly flat, and the edges sharp. One can see the number of faces.

This picture also shows how the crystal was started by tying a string around a small seed crystal (in the centre) that was suspended into a saturated Rochelle Salt solution (by the string). The crystal then grew around the seed.

To see what the effect of "contaminating" (or "doping") this crystal with copper salts has on the shape and colour, Click Here. You can also view a multiple crystal.
